DAVID MILLER (Founder) - Biographical Info
Born in Brooklyn, New York, but raised in Los Angeles, California, David Miller is a graduate of the
University of California at Berkeley with a bachelor's degree in Political Science and a minor in
African-American Studies.
Following graduation Miller returned to Los Angeles where he worked in the music industry for
eleven years. With an emphasis on marketing, promotions, A&R and publishing, Miller earned
numerous accolades and considerable recognition throughout urban music circles nationwide.
His analytic musical acumen, ability to maximize results with minimal resources, and personable
networking skills helped to solidify his reputation with his entertainment industry peers.
While working full-time in the music and entertainment industry, Miller founded an urban think
tank called Timbuktu, a grass roots non-profit organization committed to empowering urban Los
Angeles through multifaceted intellectual exchange. Timbuktu held monthly panel discussions
and open forums on topics ranging from AIDS and the war in Iraq, to race relations and education.
Ultimately, Miller's interest in geopolitical issues (including global warming and Peak Oil) and
their likely effects on the American way of life, inspired him to pursue a career change and to help
urban communities prepare for a future influenced by energy and natural resource uncertainty.
As part of the nationally renown National Urban Fellows program, Miller earned a Masters degree
in Public Administration from CUNY Baruch College in New York. As part of the program, Miller
spent was selected to work at the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency (SFRA) as the Special
Assistant to the Executive Director, Marcia Rosen.
During his mentorship assignment at the agency, Miller gained a wide-range of knowledge and
experience working in the Project Management and Planning departments on various housing
and economic development programs. He helped to write a historical transition report for San
Francisco's well-known Fillmore District, and he also coordinated the writing and development of
the agency's interim Sustainability Policy based on his findings from numerous local and national
"green building" conferences and panel discussions. Moreover, the subject of his masters
thesis, Treating an Oil Shortage as an Emergency: Is San Francisco Ready?, has been well-
received by numerous community leaders and government officials throughout the Greater Los
Angeles area, the Bay Area, and around the country.
By combining his entertainment and marketing background, with a Masters degree in Public
Administration and recent hands-on real-world experience in the field, Miller has established a
burgeoning consulting firm with a strong understanding of community-oriented education and
regional planning. In response to these ever-changing times, through STEPPINGSTONE
ENTERPRISES, David Miller hopes to promote innovative ways to think, plan, and do emergency
preparedness and public policy.
